The MacGillivray's have had a bumper crop of grain this season while the rest of the Highlands faces a winter with no food. Euna, the Laird's daughter, and steward of the grain, wants to use the grain to buy protection for their clan that lost too many warriors fighting the English. Many clans want the grain, but want to take it without paying. When the MacKenzies try to force Euna into a marriage alliance for the grain she knows she has to find protection for herself and her clan, and she has to do so quickly. When he hears rumors of the MacGillivray's excess wheat he offers to buy wheat at a premium, but when he meets Euna the MacGillivray's beautiful steward he decides that a marriage alliance is what he prefers. Euna is reluctant, however, and instead offers tribute for protection. Tribute isn't enough for Tearlach, he won't be happy until he can have the spirited Euna as his own. Euna's heart is stolen with Tearlach but when she finds out where he's been for the last fifteen years she is broken hearted and turns her back on the one man she thought could save her and her clan.
